Noods Art InstAllation @Basscoast
Want to build an art installation at a festival? All you need is a bit of inspiration and a makerspace!
This project started with a new member having no experience with the CNC router, Laser and Wood Shop tools.
The result? Late Night Noods @ Bass Coast 2024
Sea to Sky local Aaron Rosenberg first worked with Bass Coast while writing and photographing for Festivals Worlds in 2017 and 2018. Bass Coast is an independent & artist owned festival run by women, free of corporate sponsorship and rooted in artistic expression. Each year, Bass Coast offers art grants to applicants hoping to exhibit interactive installations during the annual festival.
When Oscar, founder of Create Makerspace, suggested they apply for a grant and use the makerspace to build an installation, Aaron jumped on the opportunity and put together a proposal for a 10 ft tall, interactive noodle box with a spicy twist. The proposal accepted by Bass Coast featured a 3d model made in google sketchup.
After getting the proposal approved, the next step was design and fabrication. Aaron took the CNC router, Laser and Wood Shop tools classes offered at Create Makerspace, and began learning Fusion 360 to design the installation.
The laser allowed Aaron to quickly iterate on small, scaled down prototypes of the project before beginning construction of the full size installation.
A laser was also used to create custom jewelry for the Noodle Box team by collaborators Neon Drip.
After designing and prototyping, it was ready to cut the full size installation from 8’ by 4’ sheets of marine plywood sourced from Windsor Plywood Whistler using the CNC router.
The CNC router allowed Aaron and Oscar to create a structure which could be assembled from flat pieces of plywood quickly, without screws or metal hardware.
With the physical construction complete, they were ready for painting, lighting and transport to Bass Coast!
Featured as one of the top 5 favourite installations by art-bc, the Noodle Box was a popular installation with a constant audience exploring the box, gallery and community photos.
The photo gallery inside the installation was shot and curated by Sean Bird Photography who excels at instilling portrait sessions with body positivity, self-love, and authentic expression.
Wholesome noodity: send noods!
Thanks to Bass Coast and the Create Makerspace team for helping to realize the Late Night Noods art installation 🍜
