Learn your way around the CREATE Makerspace textiles studio while sewing a comfy, casual pair of basic shorts. This beginner-friendly class is perfect for anyone curious about machine sewing, even if you’ve never touched a sewing machine before. You’ll get hands-on experience with fabric, tools, and stitching techniques—and walk away with both new skills and a finished pair of wearable shorts.

What You’ll Learn

  • Tour the Studio – Get to know our textiles space, sewing machines, and essential tools

  • Sewing 101 – Learn common terms, notions, and how to handle fabric

  • Fabric Fundamentals – Understand grainlines, measuring, and fabric orientation

  • Cut Like a Pro – Use a rotary cutter and mat to cut fabric from a simple pattern

  • Machine Basics – Thread the machine, choose stitches, and adjust settings

  • Sewing Techniques – Practice seams, backstitching, topstitching, and more
