Learn your way around the CREATE Makerspace textiles studio while making your own custom tote bag! This beginner-friendly class covers sewing machine basics, fabric handling, and stitching techniques—perfect for those with little to no machine experience. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a finished tote bag and the skills to start your own sewing projects

What You’ll Learn

  • Tour of the textiles space – Get familiar with the tools, machines, and workspace

  • Sewing terminology & tools – Learn the names of notions and essential sewing supplies

  • Fabric basics – Understanding grainlines, fabric orientation, and measuring techniques

  • Cutting techniques – Using a rotary cutter & mat for precise fabric cutting

  • Sewing machine operation – Threading, choosing stitches, and adjusting settings

  • Sewing techniques – Seam allowance, backstitching, topstitching, and finishing seams

  • Bag construction – Making & turning straps, assembling, and completing your tote bag

What You Can Make with These Skills:

Tote Bags & Simple Bags – Customize bags with different fabrics, straps, and pockets.

Basic Home Textiles – Sew pillowcases, napkins, or simple curtains.

Clothing Repairs & Alterations – Fix seams, adjust hems, and upcycle old clothes.
