Textiles - Bestie Bag

Learn how to follow a pattern to cut, sew and finish the cult-classic Bestie Bag project from Blackbird Fabrics.

“Meet the Bestie Bag! From everyday errands to life's greatest adventures, this bag will be your cute new sidekick. The Bestie Bag is a banana-shaped carry-all companion with four different views, so you can tailor its size, straps, and pockets to suit your needs and style!”

This is a two class workshop on two consecutive Mondays:

  • 6pm May 27th

  • 6pm June 3rd

Learning Objectives:

  • Changing a needle

  • Changing a machine foot – using a zipper foot

  • Sewing a zipper

  • Using interfacing

  • Using a pattern to create a finished object

  • Adding straps and lining to create a professional finish and well-structured bag.

Things to bring:

Students will need to supply their own fabric. In town, we suggest Pearl's (an upcycled sheet or duvet works great for lining!) or Walmart. For ordering online or in Vancouver, we love Dressew, Our Social Fabric and Blackbird Fabric.

Fabric requirements are as follows: approx. 1 metre in a heavier fabric for the outside, and 1 metre in a lightweight woven fabric for the lining. More specific yardage requirements can be found here.

"When selecting your fabric, medium to heavyweight wovens are the way to go! Our top picks are: denim, canvas, twill, heavyweight nylon, ripstop, leather, and vinyl. Though strong on the outside, your Bestie can be soft at heart: lightweight wovens such as poplin, lawn, batiste, and quilting weight cotton will work perfectly for an optional lining."

Thread, notions, printed pattern, and all tools are supplied

If you’d like to use your own sewing machine, please bring it with you.

Prerequisites:

Textiles Level 1 or equivalent experience. If you know how to thread and straight stitch with a home sewing machine, you’re ready!
