The News Is Out: We’re Expanding

We’re excited to share some big news:

Create Makerspace is growing.

Over the past few years, we’ve watched our members do incredible things in our space, from learning new skills in classes to bringing ambitious creative projects to life. As our community continues to grow, so does the need for more room to create, collaborate, and connect.

That’s why we’ve decided to expand into two brand new units, 3 and 4. We currently occupy units 1 and 2. This expansion allows us to reimagine our space in a way that better supports our members and the future of our maker’s community. The pottery studio we launched last year has grown especially fast, and we’re excited to offer an expanded pottery space so our existing members can thrive, all while we continue to offer more class options to those new to the ceramics world.

So, What Does This Mean?

Over the next month or so, we’ll be building out the two new units in preparation for the official expansion opening.

One of the new units will include:

  • A larger pottery studio with 18 wheels and dedicated handbuilding tables on the lower level

  • A relocated and expanded textiles studio upstairs

The other unit will include:

  • Semi-private artist studios for members who need focused, long-term workspace up and downstairs

The changes for our current spaces, Units 1 and 2, will include:

  • A designated zone for digital fabrication in the upstairs of unit 2 (currently shared with the textiles studio)

  • A new member lounge, created from the existing pottery studio in unit 1, designed for relaxing, connecting, and collaborating

With the expansion, our goal is to create a bigger space where creativity can thrive, members have access to better resources, and where our community can continue to grow together.

What Can Members Expect?

For our members, this expansion means more access, more flexibility, and more possibilities.

You can look forward to:

  • Improved access to equipment and studio time

  • New opportunities for private and semi-private workspace

  • A more comfortable and organized creative environment

  • More chances to connect with other makers

We’re committed to being transparent throughout this process. We want to share updates on construction, timelines, and how the expansion may impact day-to-day operations. Most importantly, this growth allows us to welcome even more makers into our community while continuing to support our current members.

The Expanded Pottery Studio

We’ve seen just how much our community loves working with clay, whether you’re just getting started or have years of experience.

One of the most exciting parts of this expansion is the new pottery studio, which will be located in a full downstairs unit. This means:

  • Greater accessibility

  • A significantly larger working space

  • More wheels

  • More room for collaboration

  • The ability to host larger classes and workshops

  • Most importantly, members will have access to the studio when classes are running

Our pottery manager, Jensen, is passionate about creating a studio where everyone feels welcome and inspired to create. Her vision is to make the pottery space a place where beginners and experienced makers can work side by side, learn from one another, and grow their skills.

In the new space, she also plans to create new, exciting classes for new and experienced potters alike. Some of these will include new kids classes, updated progression classes after Wheel Level 1, and handbuilding workshops. She’s also excited to invite guest instructors to teach specialized workshops, giving members access to new techniques and perspectives.

For those just starting out, the larger studio will allow us to offer more frequent and varied class times, especially for Wheel Level 1, a course that has historically filled up quickly and been difficult to get into.

And yes… we’re also getting a wall extruder. Pretty exciting.

Artist Studios & What We Need From You

Our artist studios are envisioned to be a space that artists can rent to work on projects at their own pace. They’ll be 3 walled booths with space to create. We’re fleshing out the details of how exactly these will come to life, and we’re hoping for community input when the time comes.

In the upcoming weeks, we’ll put out a survey for people to have their say in pricing and the exact layout. If you have ideas, or needs, we’d love to hear from you!

What Our Staff Is Most Excited About

Behind the scenes, our team has been dreaming about this expansion for a long time.

Every day, our staff works closely with members and sees firsthand how the space is used: where things get crowded, where people need more room, and where small changes could make a big difference. This project gives us the opportunity to turn those observations into meaningful improvements.

On a personal level, we’re all excited for different reasons.

Eric is looking forward to giving the pottery studio its own dedicated space and bringing it to life through thoughtful design and decor. Jensen is excited about the studio’s expansion (no surprise there) and the ability to host more social and collaborative events in the pottery studio. Alicia is especially excited for the new member lounge, where people can connect, get to know one another, and share ideas. JB is most excited about the expanded opportunities for people in the community to create stuff, build new skills, and for the potters to have more access to a studio with higher capacity for members and classes. Dominika is excited to see what new opportunities the additional units will bring.

And our fearless leader? Oscar is the most excited for the artist studios. The addition of bays for individual artisans to have their own setup, their own tools, and their own space will enable professional makers at Create to incubate projects. He envisions the studios being occupied by jewelers, painters, potters, woodworkers, motorbike builders, fashion designers, and every other creative person you can imagine. Create Makerspace will become an ecosystem where artists exist, thrive, get inspired, and grow.

Overall, our team is obviously excited to see both current and future members benefit from an even more creative, inclusive environment. More space means more opportunities, and more incredible projects.

Looking Ahead

This expansion marks an exciting new chapter for Create Makerspace.

We’ll continue sharing updates as construction progresses, including behind-the-scenes moments and before-and-after photos. We’ll also keep reaching out to the community for feedback and ideas along the way.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received over the years. This growth wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you for being part of our community and for growing with us.

We can’t wait to welcome you into the new space and see what you create next.
